It’s true, we don’t let ourselves get over-excited about summer weather in North wales but we do get excited about the summer. Why? Well, there’s so much going on that, come rain or shine, there’s always something happening to amuse and entertain. What’s more, 2016 is shaping up to be a real vintage year with some old favourites returning to the region plus some brand-new, unique events happening for the very first time.
We couldn’t begin to list everything so we’ve chosen a few we think showcase beautiful North Wales best, to tempt you to make a great escape of your very own!
Llanrwst Country Market – every Friday, Summer months
With the revival of shabby chic and country style, local markets have enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years. The market at Llanrwst is one of our absolute favourites, in part due to the fact the Conwy Valley has an enviable reputation for delicious, high-quality homemade and local produce! There is a vast array of produce, both savoury and sweet, for you to salivate over plus lots of pretty crafts and practical items, including clothing, bags, and soft furnishings.
Llanrwst Market is held weekly in the town square, a regular fixture here since the fifteenth century, and runs all year round. It’s open every Friday between 10:45am – 1pm so head along and procure yourself a posh picnic!
Summer of Stories – various dates and locations
Wales has a proud and ancient history of storytelling and this summer we are celebrating this tradition across several CADW heritage sites. Immerse yourself in Welsh culture, learn about our heroes and relive the adventures that won them fame and glory. The story of Wales is a story fraught with passion and piety, love and loss – why not come along and find out more?
Each story lasts about half an hour, and advanced booking isn’t necessary – just come along between 11am – 4pm. For full details of CADWs Summer of Stories and to find a storyteller near you click here.
Stargazing at Bryn Celli Ddu – 20 June
The ancient site of Bryn Celli Ddu on Anglesey is home to a well-preserved Neolithic burial chamber that is frequented, not just by curious tourists, but by modern-day pagans, history buffs and summer solstice celebrants alike.
For this truly unique event, a team of astronomy experts will be on hand to take you on a thrilling tour of the night sky, pointing out the glittering constellations of the Northern Hemisphere. Bring along your telescope and camera and you’ll be shown how to get the most out of using them to capture some stunning images of the Orion Nebula and other ‘landmarks’ of the Milky Way. Don’t be put off if you’re a beginner, this event is a suitable for anyone with an interest in astronomy over the age of 12 years.
Stargazing is a waiting game, so dress warmly, bring something comfortable to sit on and have a hot drink at the ready. Then, lie back, look up and prepare to immerse yourself in the wonder of our universe.
Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod – 5 – 10 July
Now in its seventieth year, the Llangollen Eisteddfod has been a beloved summer tradition in Wales since 1947 and is one of the world’s most impressive cultural festivals. Annually, around 4,000 performers from the four corners of the globe descend on this beautiful Welsh town to sing and dance and demonstrate, above all, international peace and friendship.
This year, Welsh opera diva and Forces’ Sweetheart Katherine Jenkins headlines the festival where she will be performing a concert version of Georges Bizet’s opera, Carmen, on 5 July. The annual ‘Heart of Llangollen’ concert takes place on 8 July and will showcase the talents of our international visitors, including the Dance Champions competition and a Caribbean Carnival Extravaganza. The festival draws to a close on 9 July with one of the highlights of the eisteddfod: the ‘Choir of the World’ competition. With the prestigious Pavarotti Trophy as the prize, this competition decides the best overall choir of the festival.
Brand-new for 2016, the Ffres Catering Company are setting up a pop-up restaurant, ‘Mabon’, on site, complete with champagne bar and tapas menu. Evening pre-concert meals can be booked in advance but visitors are invited to walk-in during the day for a bite to eat. Our advice? It’s going to be popular so show up early!
